Hanley Farm - Summer Thursdays

SOHS HANLEY FARM PRESENTS: SUMMER THURSDAY EVENT

Explore the Hanley Farm and gardens, bring a picnic and take a tour of the Hanley House museum. The outside portion your Hanley House tour will be in-person, and there will be video-tour of the interior. There is a modest fee for house tours, but everything else is free! June 3 is the first Summer Thursday at Hanley Farm, featuring guided tours of The Bard’s Garden and a mini–Heritage Plant Sale.

Come explore Shakespeare from a botanical perspective! The Bard’s Garden features hundreds of flowers, herbs, vegetables, fruit and nut trees, berry bushes and grasses mentioned in five of Shakespeare’s plays: Hamlet, The Winter’s Tale, Love’s Labor’s Lost, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Romeo and Juliet, plus the entrance features the Temple Rose Garden from Henry VI, Part 1.

As you stroll the garden paths, immerse yourself in the sights, sounds, smells, and tactile experiences of this unique botanical garden. Learn the name of each plant in the garden and its accompanying verse in the Bard’s play. Then treat yourself to Shakespeare-inspired tastings made from farm-fresh produce.

The Bard’s Garden is an ongoing horticultural project designed, planted, and maintained by local garden writer and educator, Rhonda Nowak. Rhonda will be on hand to answer questions and tell stories that will make you wonder if Shakespeare was a gardener in his spare time!

Did you miss Hanley Farm’s April Heritage Plant Sale? Thursday evening, June 3, there will be a smaller plant sale, featuring leftover plants from the April sale. These plants have grown bigger, and many are blooming. Perennials, herbs, and special one-of-a-kind plants are available, including Native trees and shrubs, gorgeous yellow daylilies, dusty miller, goldenrod, and sunchokes. Fall bloomers and more are ready to fill in your garden spaces. There are even some pumpkin/sunflower pots ready!

June 3: Rhonda Nowak gives guided tours of the Shakespeare Gardens. And there will be a mini-Hanley Heritage Plant sale!

Summer Thursday events are held weekly, 4pm-8pm. The farm will be open for picnics; self-guided Hanley and Shakespeare Garden tours; a Farmers Market; as well as Covid-free, “hybrid” Hanley House tours. The outside portion of each tour will be in-person, with a video of the inside tour. There will be a modest $3 to $5 fee for the house tours, but everything else is free
