MAKING MUSIC AT SOHS HANLEY FARM
Throughout history, music has been a way of praising deities, observing rites of passage, lifting spirits, and celebrating special occasions. For its final Living History Summer Thursday on August 24th at SOHS Hanley Farm, the Southern Oregon Historical Society will be offering a special evening of music making from 5pm to 8pm. SOHS Hanley Farm is located at 1053 Hanley Road (Hwy. 238), one mile east of Jacksonville.
At 5:30pm we’ll be acknowledging the individuals who settled Southern Oregon—and everyone who has ever attended a summer camp—with a sing-along around an unlit campfire. At 7pm, we’ll have a special performance by the Siskiyou Violins.
The Siskiyou Violins are a world class violin ensemble of young performers who have won three gold medals at the annual New York International Music Festival at Carnegie Hall. They were the first performers to receive a score of 100 from the judges and are a winner of the coveted Carnegie Medal. And Southern Oregon can claim them as its own!
In addition, you can visit the historic Hanley home, lived in by three generations of the Hanley Family and filled with their things. You can take a hayride or enjoy a picnic in the shade of the Hanley gardens. Costumed characters representing Hanley Family members will be on hand to greet you. And it’s all free, except for the Hanley House tours which are $10 for adults and $5 for children with a 20% discount for SOHS members.
Plan on joining SOHS in celebrating the heritage of the Rogue Valley from 5pm to 8pm on this final Living History Summer Thursday at our 1850s working farmstead. SOHS Hanley Farm was once the headquarters of the largest stock raising empire in Southern Oregon. A “Century Farm,” it’s listed on the National Register of Historic Sites.
